Case Study 3: Remote Training Lab Network Security

Client
A significant contributor to the SAN storage solution space

Problem
The client needed to build a secure network architecture for their remote learning lab environment. This client's primary mechanism for end-user education and training is through remote access to the client's lab environment containing complex storage configurations involving their product line. Students are able to configure and interact with the client's product line in a simulated real-world environment over the web. The lab environment changes often to meet particular training needs. The challenge was that under the prior network setup, only one class per week could be held. The goals of this engagement were:

  • To structure the network and administrative tools in such a way as to increase the number of classes that could be offered

  • Increase overall security by ensuring that students would be contained to their specific training device without access to other devices or interruption to other students.

Taos Solution
While this engagement could have been performed as a discrete Professional Services engagement, the client preferred the flexibility of having our talent on-board - retaining the ability to direct the efforts of the Taos consultant as understanding of needs and challenges evolved rather than working to a set of tightly defined deliverables.

Supported Deployment

Taos and the client determined to engage in a supported contract with one senior Taos staff member backed by a variety of people in our Professional Services Department. Taos provided a long tenured staff member whose skills in the area of networking and network security had been gained through assignments with Taos and through research in Taos' lab environment. During the engagement Taos provided him with support from our Project Management team to assist in ensuring a well managed timeline for deliverables. The consultant received documentation assistance from our Documentation Specialist and Technical Support from the TSG. This group reviewed his proposed solutions and provided guidance on appropriate hardware recommendations and configurations.

Results
The client achieved a secured classroom/lab network where up to 3 classes per week could be held - tripling their ROI. Equally important was a secure environment where students could not accidentally (or purposely) step outside of their designated training devices, interfere with other classes, or utilize more machines than allotted to them.
