Case Study 4: Datacenter Move

Client
A Global 1000 computer gaming company.

Problem
The client needed to move approximately 2000 servers to a new datacenter located across the country. They needed to form a plan to create the appropriate order for the cutover and make sure that the project took advantage of the opportunity to create a better logical structure to their environment.

Taos Solution
Taos' solution consisted of a Professional Services engagement incorporating a Baseline Technology Assessment, Gap Analysis, and Strategic Plan.

Baseline Technology Assessment

Taos' Professional Services team first performed a Baseline Technology Assessment to create an asset inventory and resulting map of the infrastructure. Taos organized the servers according to services and gathered information on critical services and their windows for downtime.

Gap Analysis and Strategic Plan

After performing the Technology Assessment, Taos analyzed the information against the project objectives and developed a detailed cutover plan for each of the services and for the overall project. The project team developed the cutover sequence by service and machine, the restart procedures, the contingency planning and rollback procedures, and the testing plan - all of which significantly reduced the risk of any surprises during the move.

Managed Deployment

With the complete project plan in place, Taos Professional Services team assumed the lead in managing the server shutdowns and restarts during the move. The continuity from planning through implementation was key to ensuring the success of the move, leveraging the combined strengths of both in-house and Taos staff.

Results
The datacenter move was completed on-time, within budget, and with minimal disruption of services. In addition, the logical structure of the environment was improved in efficiency, scalability, and maintainability - key elements of achieving and sustaining operational excellence.
