April Issue of the Taos Newsletter: Wireless
Networking
Message from Taos Founder and CEO, Ric Urrutia, and Co-Founder, Alexis Tatarsky
This third issue of IT
Intelligence is devoted to shedding some light on the deployment
of wireless network technologies within high-tech firms. Wireless
can seamlessly enhance productivity, or it can be a nightmare
to users and IT staff alike; it can enhance IT security, or it
can be riddled with holes; it can be deployed economically or
it can be deployed wastefully. One thing it cannot be is ignored:
Just as we can no longer imagine a company deciding not to provide
its employees with cell phones or PDAs, opting-out of wireless
network technology entirely is no longer an option. Wireless
is here: users are demanding it, and emerging applications depend
on it. Thankfully, the technology is maturing to the point that,
with a little planning and understanding, those needs can be
met.
We are delighted to share with you three unique perspectives
on the deployment of wireless:
- Ginna
Raahauge, Director of Worldwide IT and Real Estate of PalmSource (the
makers of the PalmOS & the center of a community of developers
of mobile applications) provides this month’s CIO
interview. Raahauge shares with us some of the specific
choices she has made in deploying Wi-Fi and Wireless LAN at
her company; issues in securing and supporting wireless networks;
and their approach to 802.11g and other new technologies. Raahauge’s
goal is to enable a “completely mobile workforce”,
and she’s ahead of the pack in working toward this goal.
- Rita
Khayat-Toubia, the CIO of Proxim (a
leader in Wi-Fi and wireless broadband solutions to enterprises & service
providers) provides
us an overview of current wireless terminology and standards;
her perspectives on wireless as an enterprise productivity
enhancer; practices and technologies enabling secure deployments,
and emerging trends and directions.
- Koji Kuramatsu, a senior member of Taos’ staff, describes
a project he led, migrating a client from first-generation
wireless technologies to a more robust, secure, higher-performance
solution.
The intelligent deployment of emerging technologies
is one of the primary keys to a CIO’s providing value to
his or her company. Taos is privileged to provide insight and
strategic direction to many forward-thinking IT organizations.
If you think our experience might of value to you, please do let
us know.
