Running IT as a Business - Revisited

Do you hear an echo? Perhaps experiencing a little déjà vu? Or do we just sound like a broken record? You may be asking “Why, oh why, are you doing another newsletter on Running IT as a Business?” Well, the answer is quite simple: we enjoy the energy this topic brings. There is nothing that excites us more than watching our CIO friends succeed within their organization and we feel that those who are committed to aligning themselves with the business are more likely see positive results.

To that point, our CIO interview in this edition of IT Intelligence is with George Lin, the new CIO of Dolby Laboratories. George has always been a forward-thinking pioneer throughout his various CIO roles and continues to focus on new and inventive ways of running IT as a business. In this Q&A, George describes in detail how he has succeeded in running IT as a business in his past roles by empowering the company to make decisions regarding IT priorities, and to ensure that the executive management team has bought into the vision and has a vested interest in the overall success of the IT organization. He also provides insight on how to market your IT organization to the “masses,” promoting a better understanding of what your department’s capabilities are and how your internal customers can leverage these capabilities for the betterment of the company as a whole.

Our own Mark Johnson, who has recently been promoted to Vice President of Strategy & Customer Solutions, delivers his 3rd installment in the Series of “The Business of IT.” This installment focuses on three areas: 1) enterprise architecture, 2) the marketing and customer service aspects of running an IT organization, and 3) business office matters. In his true-to-form provocative way, Mark suggests that CIOs and IT organizations that don’t have a strategy for these three issues will find themselves updating their resumes as the business chooses to go a different direction than internal IT for leverage.

Over the course of 18 years, 1,000 clients, and many thousands of consulting engagements Taos has become a part of the fabric of the Silicon Valley. We pride ourselves not only on the phenomenal team of technology experts who form the backbone of our company, but also on our contribution to the success of our many clients and on the ways in which they rely on us for advice, insight, and support. It is our hope that this newsletter ultimately becomes another way we give back to our community - a community that includes you and all those who strive to advance the state of the art of IT in these wonderfully dynamic times. Please feel free to contact me anytime. I welcome any comments or suggestions you wish to provide.
