Dear Friend of Taos,Ric Urrutia & Coco Brown

Just as spring is beginning to heat up, so are our recent engagements and service offerings. In this issue, we're showcasing how our Infrastructure Managed Services helped one client achieve a 100% resolution rate and 22-minute mean resolution time for monitoring alerts. On the services front, in partnership with Symphony Consulting, we're proud to introduce a full array of services in IT Procurement, Contract Negotiations and Supplier Management.

As much as we're excited about what we've been doing, we're also excited about who we've been working with. We're welcoming our latest addition to our OCIO team, Tim Campos, who joins us from KLA-Tencor. And, finally, Tizoc Spiers, a Senior Windows Consultant, provides insight into the pros and cons of Desktop Virtualization as it compares to traditional desktop deployments and server hosted solutions.

Warm regards

The Executive Leadership Team at Taos

Ric UrrutiaLinux 2.0

Just prior to founding Taos, Alexis and I had been working at Apple in the A/UX group porting SVR3 to the Mac. Prior to that, I was doing kernel work at Plexus (System 3 and SVR2). Because of our depth in System V, we were able to quickly build sticky relationships with System V Unix manufacturers like SGI, MIPS, HP, Pyramid, Arix and Convergent Technologies. We also had significant relationships with all Unix manufacturers regardless of OS flavor and proudly serviced Sun, Hal, Fujitsu, DEC, Soulbourne and the like. In 1992, Sun Microsystems introduced the Solaris Operating System replacing SunOS. This was a monumental shift for the company as they made a decision to move away from a BSD-based operating system and instead embraced AT&T's System V Release 4 (SVR4). Read more...

Tizoc SpiersPros and Cons of Desktop Virtualization

By Tizoc Spiers, Senior Windows Consultant

With all the talk around virtualization of data centers and applications, sooner or later you're going to hear or inquire about Desktop Virtualization, also known as Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).

VDI is, at its simplest, the virtualization of the desktop. Imagine having all of your desktops running within your data center instead of distributed around your enterprise. Ideally, there would be minimal hardware failures, simplified OS distribution and patching, and simplified application installations and upgrades. One could almost imagine an end to a large number of the frustrations around local desktop deployment. Read More...
