All too often, we either accidentally check yes to install a program or even install a program on purpose, only to have it start at every logon. This can be a waste of resources and in one case caused me numerous headaches. One time, I initiated a wsus offline install of updates, it did the installs but then began to start at each start-up causing a reboot and it would go through this loop and not stop. I ended up having to manually stop the process on each boot up. As you can see, this can be quite annoying.
To remedy this, go to the Windows download site and download this nifty little app called Autoruns for Windows (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx?ocid=fwlink). What this app does is allow you to see what is set to start on both the registry and in the logon programs. It allows you to delete those programs or even just disable them. Take a look. I’m sure it will make your life easier as an administrator, as it has mine.
